From wind-bitten lands

down into the realm of trees

a golden pathway.

I had just spent almost all of the previous five days above timberline on the Colorado Trail and finally descended to a lower elevation and the golden glow of Autumn in the San Juans.

Many signs. Many voices

all across the land

The sun has gone down

Better not sleep here tonight

Polar Bears nearby

I stop and listen

The marmot at his pulpit

says save public lands

Forever changing

brightly colored reflections

dancing in the waves

Near day’s end. Alone

on a shadowed landscape

I walk toward home
