Petroglyphs of birds

Many hundreds of years old

Can you find Big Bird?

This is a detailed image of petroglyphs at the V-Bar-V Heritage Site.

It is the largest known petroglyph site in the Verde Valley of central Arizona, and one of the best-preserved. The rock art site consists of 1,032 petroglyphs in 13 panels

The petroglyphs were created by Southern Sinagua residents between about 1150 and 1400 AD.

The docent who gave a really interesting talk said that the petroglyphs of birds are believed to be Sandhill Cranes.  He said that the “Big Bird” petroglyph could depict a Sandhill Crane looking straight ahead with the feathers raised on the top of its head.  I’m not sure that a Sandhill Crane has enough feathers on its head to do that.  It could be a Snowy Egret and less likely a Great Blue Heron.  Any guesses?

Photo and Haiku – Introduction

Almost every day I write a haiku (must have 3 lines, lines follow 5-7-5 syllable count, does not have to rhyme) for one of my photos. I have been doing this for over a year and as time permits I will begin to post previous written haikus and their accompanying image(s). Incidentally, I do this with two other people and we exchange our creations on a daily basis.

At the bottom of each post….below “leave a reply”…….. you can then go forward or backward to the previous or next post. If you want to go back to the main menu just click on the Adventures, Animals and images blue box in the upper left-hand corner.

Please click on “Older Posts” at the bottom of the page…… as I have been adding progressively older posts each day as well as the current day’s post and they will appear as the most recent in the blog. Does that make any sense? Most of you probably haven’t read this far anyway. If so, you get a virtual hug from me.

Happy Halloween

I was going to send an image of a crocodile eating a Thomson’s Gazelle with lots of blood, but thought better of it.
