Awesome “Ring of Fire”

Annular solar eclipse

It got quite chilly.

Annular Solar Eclipse 14 October 2023
My friend Roz and I traveled south of Farmington, New Mexico on highway 371 toward the Bisti Badlands.  We turned west onto Navajo Route 5  (aka Indian Service Rte 5) and then found a good place to park that we determined was about right on the centerline of the eclipse as determined by Latitude and Longitude.

Townsend’s Solitaire
Eats ripe Juniper berries
Has a white eye ring

These birds survive the winter by eating ripe Juniper berries. One study suggested they would need to eat between 42,000 and 84,000 juniper berries to survive the winter. Now that is a lot of berries.

A gem in the wild,

remote and isolated,

is why we explore.

Hiked into this beautiful arch down in New Mexico today.  There were two places where we had to scramble up a couple of ledges.  Didn’t see another hiker all day.  In some ways this arch is similar to Delicate Arch in Arches NP although not as grand.
