General Sherman

The largest tree by volume

In winter beauty

This is the General Sherman giant sequoia tree located in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park. By volume, it is the largest known living single-stem tree on Earth. It is estimated to be around 2,200 to 2,700 years old…….One of the most amazing things to me is that up there….. in the tips of those massive branches and at the very top of the tree….way up high….. are some really really badass apical meristem cells. They have kept on undergoing cell division (mitosis) day after day for 2,200 to 2,700 years!!! That is truly mind-blowing, when you think of it.
