Summertime stillness

Evening calm in the mountains

Worth the backpack in.

On the weekend, I did an overnight backpack up to Crater Lake in the Weminuche Wilderness with my friend, Eryn. According to my Far Out app the hike is 5.8 miles (it is listed as 5.5 miles on some websites). The hike going in wore me out. My pack weighed 24 pounds and it was slow going for me. I did hike faster going out – averaging slightly over 2 mph including stops. Nevertheless, I am a bit worried about my upcoming CT section hike of 101 miles from Monarch Crest to Spring Creek Pass. I figure 16 miles/day for 7 days should do it. I know that some of the stretches are fairly flat, but each segment has its ups and downs. If I’m worn out after doing 5.8 miles, how am I going to do averaging 16 miles/day while carrying at least a week’s worth of food? I did several rugged 16+ miles days last year and 100 miles in my first 7 days….so I know that I can do it….just need to get in better shape.
