The macaroni penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus) is a species of penguin found from the Subantarctic to the Antarctic Peninsula. It is a medium-sized bulky penguin with a bulbous red bill and a dash of stiff orange “hair.”
Their name comes from the distinctive yellow feathered crest on the penguins’ heads that apparently resemble the feathers that were featured on hats worn by men who dressed beyond the dictates of fashion in the 18th century in England; referred to as macaroni’s (just like in the classic nursery rhyme ‘Yankee Doodle’).
Here’s some more images of Macaroni Penguins also from Hercules Bay, South Georgia.
I thought the penguin in your first image looked more like a Puffin. How wonderful to see these birds! Your images are wonderful.

Thank you so much, Deborah. I was so fortunate to have seen and photographed eight different species of penguins.
